Targus HeatDefense Cooling Mat Review

Here’s a quick video I put together on a Targus HeatDefense Cooling Mat that I purchased today.  I have an issue with my MacBook Pro i7 generating too much heat especially when video editing, running multiple VMs in Fusion or in fact even doing basic tasks such as email and web browsing.  This makes for much discomfort when I have my MacBook Pro on my lap and also makes any surface I have it on become very hot.

As such I was hoping that the Targus HeatDefense Cooling Mat would help reduce the amount of heat on the base of the MacBook Pro.  Check out the video below to find out how I got on with the Cooling Mat.

  1. My experience of toasty Mac laptops when web browsing leads me to suggest click to flash (http://clicktoflash.com/) if you’re using Safari. The Flash plug in on a Mac seems particularly CPU intensive.

There’s a comparable Chrome plug in if you’re using that, and I’d be amazed if there isn’t one for Firefox.

    • Hi Ric,

Thanks for the tip – I will definitely try that out. I notice that Firefox is often the main culprit for my MacBook Pro’s excessive CPU utilisation.

      Cheers,

  2. I concur with Ric on the clicktoflash. I noticed it made a big difference.

If you’re still looking for another solution especially when doing heavy processing stuff and using the laptop on your lap. I can recommend the Lapinator (http://www.lapinator.com/). I bought one back 5-6 years ago when I had a 17″ Core Duo MBP which also got incredibly hot. It made a world of difference, and I still use it for my i5 MBP I’m running now though I don’t think it gets anywhere close to as hot as my old one.

I have no affiliation with Lapinator, just a satisfied customer.

    Cheers,

    • Hi Jason,

Thanks for letting me know. I think there may be something up with my Flip Cam. Just hope I still have the receipt for it so I can get it fixed under warranty.

      All the best,

      Simon
